 LCD defectAug 09, 2010
After two years of usage, the LCD screen started to have grey-lines developed recently. Then it turns into multiple grey spots. Apparently this camera's LCD aged out very quickly. I can hardly use this camera anymore. It is embarrassed to handover this camera to somebody to take pictures for us when my family went to Yosemite this weekend!
LCD problems developed after timeAug 05, 2010
After a couple of months of not using my Canon SD870 IS LCD (I loved this little camera), I turned it on and discovered that the 3" LCD screen developed two 1/2" gray spots! I've had the camera for a couple of years and used it very infrequently (vacations, birthdays, etc.). I've done a search on the Internet about this problem and found out that this LCD problem with this camera (perhaps all PowerShots?) is a very common defect.
I warn you - this camera LCD, though beautiful to look at (mine is protected by a screen protector) very probably WILL DIE within a relatively short period of time. The gray spots (or "artifacts") block out the what you are trying to take a picture of, as well as the menu/settings, etc. This makes this camera very hard to use, if not impossible, from this point forward. What a horrible problem for an otherwise very nice camera. Don't believe me? Google it. Buyer beware.
Low QualityJul 17, 2010
I have a Canon SD870, I see a black dot on the LCD, almost half inch, when I turn the camera off, I can still see the spot, although it's now lighter than the dark LCD. So this appears to be a physical defect of some kind, not electronic. There are a few horizontal rows of pixels below the larger spot. they are grayish in color and semi translucent with small patches of pink and green ones around its edges.

I've had my 870is for about two years. It was my third Canon compact camera (and my fourth digital Canon as I also have a Rebel) as I've generally had good luck and results with them. I bought it for the wide angle lens and the stabilizer but I also liked the the 8mp sensor, which is all you need in a camera of this size, and having some minor ability to manipulate the camera in manual mode. I've generally been pleased with it.
However about eight months ago I started having an artifact on the LCD screen. This artifact turned into a grey circle. Now I have two gray circles and the camera has become nearly unusuable. Since I don't always use a case, although one would expect to find a pocketable camera in a pocket, I thought that this problem may have been something I caused even though none of my prior cameras had this problem.
Now I'm finding out (a) that many people have had the same problem with this camera and (b) that Canon is not willing to do anything about it of the camera is out of warranty.
This is very disappointing to me. Since I have to buy a new camera since this one is nearly unusable I am going to be looking at, and probably buying, a camera from another manufacturer. This is entirely unacceptable.

I've had this camera for a couple of years. It has received light duty because we have other cameras for use around the house. For awhile we thought we had scratched the beautiful LCD on the back of the camera, but pictures were unaffected, so my wife and I figured we could live with the problem. Then the "scratches" went away and a hard-to-ignore gray circle appeared. I mean this thing is right in the way when you want to compose a picture. Did some online research and found this is getting to be a common problem with this camera. I would not recommend this camera, which is too bad, because it has taken some good pictures (outdoors) because it's easy to carry around.
